RECORD
BREAKING RUN, MEGA BANDSAW -14 YEARS
After
almost 14 years of operation, totalling over 35,000 hours, the
MEGA 250HAS automatic bandsaw installed at Locum Fine Steels
Limited in Sheffield is still going strong. During this time the
MEGA 250, supplied by sawing technology specialist, Prosaw, has
cut over 6,000 tonne of carbon and alloy steel bar, and
according to works manager Peter Dakin, “has been very
reliable and needed very little in the way of repair”.
“When we
bought the machine from Prosaw nearly 14 years ago, we needed an
automatic machine able to cut steel up to 250mm but at a
reasonable price. We even considered buying a second - hand
machine but the price and specification of a new MEGA saw
persuaded us otherwise, and we have been proved right by its
performance over the past 14 years”, adds Mr Dakin.
“It
is a very good machine and is still the most reliable saw we
have in operation today”, Concludes Mr Dakin.
Locum is a
steel stockist supplying the engineering industries
with carbon and alloy steels such as EN24 and SAE8620.
Much of this is delivered in cut lengths ready for conversion
into a final product, which is where the accuracy and
productivity of the MEGA bandsaw is of benefit. It is used to
automatically cut mainly round bar from 25mm to 200mm diameter
in lengths from 12mm to over 600mm and is equipped with a roller
run-out table to accommodate the cut pieces.
After
almost 14 years of operation, totalling over 35,000 hours, the
MEGA is still going strong.
Locum operates
the bandsaw on a single 8 - hour shift but invariably allows a
batch run to be completed past end-of-shift,
so that on average the machine is in continual production for an
average of 10 hours per day or 50 hours per week. And, it has
been doing this ever since its installation in 1987 and
averaging over 10 tonne of output per week.
