Top Tips on How to Maintain Your Bandsaw

20th May 2026

Lee Allen Service Manager

As Prosaw’s Service Manager, I’ve spent years visiting workshops, manufacturers, and fabrication plants across the UK. One thing is always clear: a well‑maintained bandsaw performs better, lasts longer, and saves you money.

Here are my Top 10 Tips to keep your bandsaw in excellent condition.

1. Keep Your Machine Clean — Inside and Out

A clean machine is a reliable machine. Metal chips, swarf, and coolant residue build up quickly and can affect blade tracking, cut quality, and component life.

What to do:

  • Brush down the machine at the end of every shift.
  • Remove built‑up swarf from guides, wheels, and guards.
  • Clean out the swarf conveyor or tray regularly.
  • A quick 5‑minute clean each day can prevent hours of lost production later.

2. Check Your Blade Guide System Frequently

Blade guides are one of the most important components on any bandsaw. If they’re worn or misaligned, your blade won’t cut straight — no matter how new it is.

My advice:

  • Inspect carbide or roller guides weekly.
  • Ensure side guides lightly touch the blade (but aren’t clamping it).
  • Adjust rear guide bearings so they support the back of the blade correctly.
  • Correct guide alignment is often the difference between smooth cutting and blade failure.

3. Monitor Blade Tension Carefully

Too little tension causes crooked cuts. Too much tension shortens blade life. Every blade has its sweet spot, and maintaining it is crucial.

Tips for better tension:

  • Use the machine’s tension gauge — don’t guess.
  • Recheck tension when the blade warms up; it can change.
  • If your saw has automatic tensioning, still inspect it periodically.
  • Proper tension improves accuracy and dramatically reduces breakages.

 4. Maintain Your Coolant System

Coolant isn’t just for cooling — it lubricates the cut, improves surface finish, and extends blade life. Neglecting your coolant system causes major problems.

Best practice:

  • Check coolant concentration weekly using a refractometer.
  • Top up with the correct dilution ratio recommended by your coolant provider.
  • Clean out the coolant tank when contaminants build up.
  • Drain down coolant if a saw will be left unused, if left idle bacteria can grow. Check for changes in
  • smell, clarify or slim build up.
  • Poor coolant equals poor performance.

5. Inspect Drive & Idler Wheels

Wheels control blade tracking and wear. If they’re dirty or worn, no amount of guide adjustment will help.

What to look for:

  • Swarf buildup on the wheel surfaces
  • Damaged or worn wheel tyres/rims
  • Incorrect tracking causing the blade to run off‑centre
  • A quick wheel inspection can prevent unexpected downtime.

6. Check the Hydraulic System

Most industrial bandsaws rely heavily on hydraulics for feed control, clamping, and lifting.

Stay on top of it by:

  • Checking hydraulic oil levels monthly
  • Listening for unusual pump noises
  • Inspecting hoses for leaks or wear
  • Hydraulic issues are one of the most common causes of breakdowns — and one of the easiest to prevent.

7. Replace Worn Components Quickly

Sawing machines run in harsh environments, and some parts naturally wear over time — especially swarf brushes, seals, bearings, and blade guide components.

If you notice:

  • Increased vibration
  • Struggling feed rate
  • Poor cut accuracy
  • Unusual noises

…it’s time for proactive maintenance, not reactive repairs.

8. Keep a Preventative Maintenance Schedule

The most productive companies we support all share one trait: they follow a planned maintenance programme.

Benefits:

  • Fewer breakdowns
  • Better cut consistency
  • Longer blade life
  • Reduced operating costs
  • If you don’t already have a maintenance schedule, Prosaw would be happy to send pricing & details of our ‘Annual Service Plans’

9. Use Quality Blades & Genuine Parts

Your bandsaw is only as good as the blade and components you put into it. Cheap blades cost more in the long run through downtime, crooked cuts, and higher replacement frequency.

Prosaw supplies high‑quality blades and genuine OEM parts that keep your machine performing as it should.

10. Don’t Hesitate to Call the Experts

Even with great maintenance, bandsaws occasionally need professional attention. Our engineers are trained to service all major brands and models.

If you spot something unusual — or just want a routine service — we’re always here to help.

Final Thoughts

Looking after your bandsaw isn’t complicated, but it does require consistency. A little time spent on daily and weekly checks keeps your saw accurate, reliable, and efficient.

If you need support, spare parts, blades, or a full maintenance plan, the Prosaw Service Team is always just a phone call away.
