Background
I joined Prosaw as an apprentice to gain hands-on experience in a professional engineering environment, where I could develop practical skills and learn directly from experienced industry professionals. The company gave me the opportunity to work on real projects, take responsibility, and build a strong foundation in engineering.
After completing my apprenticeship, I moved into the Service Department, where I carried out servicing, preventative maintenance, and machine breakdown repairs. During my six years in this role, I worked independently and as part of a team in customer-facing environments, developing strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills while responding to both routine maintenance and urgent breakdowns. The role required extensive travel throughout the UK and internationally, supporting customers across a wide range of sites and operating conditions. This experience gave me a deep, practical understanding of Prosaw machinery in real-world use, strengthened my communication skills, and enhanced my ability to adapt to different working environments and customer requirements. Over this time, I built extensive technical knowledge and experience that continues to support my current role.

“I wanted a hands-on route into engineering rather than just classroom learning. The apprenticeship at Prosaw gave me the chance to earn, learn, and gain real experience from day one.”
2. How did being on the factory floor during your apprenticeship help you develop your skills?
“Working on the factory floor gave me a real understanding of how things work in practice. It taught me the importance of accuracy, quality, and how every stage of the process matters.”
3. What skills did you gain during your apprenticeship that you still rely on today?
“I developed strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. It also taught me how to work as part of a team and communicate effectively.”
4. Looking back, how important was your apprenticeship in shaping your career at Prosaw?
“It was fundamental. The apprenticeship laid the foundations for everything I’ve done since and gave me the confidence to progress within the business.”
